Coronelli’s beautifully coloured map of Africa in 1692. This was the first map to dispute the conventional wisdom of the time that the River Nile originated in the ‘Mountains of the Moon’ in the southern part of Africa. The large cartouche in the centre of the map, shown below, recounts the Portuguese discovery that the true source of the Nile was actually in Abyssinia.
