American Indians

Thomas McKenney and James Hall published this series of hand colored folio sized stone lithographs from 1836 to 1844, taken from oil portraits done of Indian chiefs invited to meet with President Monroe in Washington in 1821.

These portraits are of significant importance to American history as the sole documentation remaining of the original paintings which were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian in 1865.

The series was later published in a smaller octavo size from 1842 to 1870.  We offer an extensive selection of both size prints.  Please call us for the image or tribe you are seeking.
